The Health And Safety At Work etc Act 1974 is the primary piece of legislation covering occupational health and safety in the United Kingdom. The Act sets out the general duties which employers have towards employees and members of the public, and employees have to themselves and to each other.

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (the Management Regulations) generally make more explicit what employers are required to do to manage health and safety under the Health and Safety at Work Act. For example risk assessments, manual handling, working at heights, welfare facilities, training and the supplying of personal protective equipment.

Did you know that, as an employer, you are required to carry out the 11 steps listed below?

  1. Register your business
  2. Take out Employer's Liability Compulsory Insurance
  3. Appoint a competent person
  4. Write your health and safety policy
  5. Assess the risks
  6. Provide basic welfare facilities
  7. Provide free health and safety training and supervision
  8. Consult your workers
  9. Display the health and safety law poster
  10. Understand RIDDOR reporting procedures
  11. Keep up to date
